Battle of HartvilleAs a border state, Missouri was subjected to extremes from both North and South; as family members chose the Union Army or the Confederate Army “Brother against Brother” became the sentiment in Missouri, as well as in Hartville.
The Battle of Hartville occurred on the morning of January 11, 1863, when 2,500 Confederate soldiers confronted about 1,000 Union troops. Confederate General Marmaduke directed his troops from the Steele Mountain, while Union General Merrill established his battle line near the center of town. Although the Confederates won the battle, they were forced to abandon the raid and return to friendly territory. Union casualties numbered only 78 of which seven were killed and 64 wounded. The Confederate casualties totaled 111 of which 12 were killed and 96 wounded. |
